What were you doing before starting your apprenticeship?

I had just finished my A-Levels, and started looking for an apprenticeship in Early Years.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship in the Early Years field?

I really wanted to be part of the development of the younger children, and be able to help them grow and develop, ensuring they are prepared for the world, and their life ahead.

What does a typical week look like (work vs training)?

I will often start my day in the toddler room. I help with breakfast and clear up,. Then I will go and do some training for a couple of hours, until lunch. After, I serve lunch in either the preschool room, or the baby room (this helps me learn about the needs of each room). I then either stay in the preschool room or go back to the toddler room for the rest of the day. I leave for my lunch break. This is how each day of my week goes. I get a good balance of study/training, and practical work and training.

What new skills have you developed since starting?

I have developed my communication skills. I have learnt my paediatric first aid as well as food safety training. Another skill I have developed is learning lots about child development, and how I can help a young child develop through their first few years (0 – 7 years).

Can you give one example of how you’ve used these skills at work?

I have shown good communication skills, by asking questions to other early years practitioners. This means I can learn more and be more efficient and proactive in my work. Learning lots about child development means I can start to spot and observe each milestone that a child achieves.

What has been the biggest challenge so far?

My biggest challenge is getting to feel comfortable in a new environment.

What support helped you overcome it?

The other staff members are all really welcoming, and are always willing to help me with learning how the nursery runs, and with any other work needs.

What are your next steps after completing your apprenticeship?

Continuing in the early years sector, working as a level 3 childcare educator.

Has this apprenticeship helped prepare you for your career? How?

Yes, the apprenticeship has helped me prepare for my career in early years, as it is teaching me about the role and how to be successful in it.

What has been the best part of your apprenticeship so far?

Getting to know all the children and staff.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship to others? Why?

Yes, I would recommend an apprenticeship to others. It is a great way to learn on the job, giving practical opportunities to learn, as well as learning the theory behind it.

Miriam’s apprenticeship has given her practical experience, confidence, and the essential skills needed for a successful career in Early Years. Her journey perfectly demonstrates how apprenticeships provide skills for life. Preparing individuals for both their careers and personal growth.
