What were you doing before starting your apprenticeship?

I worked as waitress in Manchester for a year then moved back home and did a Your Future programme which an organisation who helps people get back into work.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship in the Early Years field?

Whilst I was in Manchester I babysat for a few months. I took part in activities like playdough, and obstacle course in the garden and read them stories. Also, I helped with routines at home e.g. making them meals, assist with toileting and assisting with  bed times. ensuring the home was kept tidy. I really enjoyed this and wanted to explore the industry.

What does a typical week look like (work vs training)?

I work 5 days a week, 30 hours. 10% off the job training.

What new skills have you developed since starting?

Communication skills, resilience, safeguarding, problem solving skills, I have found ways of coping with my memory, and I am starting to develop my organisation skills and time management skills.

Can you give one example of how you’ve used these skills at work?

A child was struggling to get to sleep while the class was at Forest school. I remained patient, used my initiative to give her favourite cuddly toy, and helped her follow the usual routine. Although it took some time, I stayed calm and eventually managed to get her to sleep.

What has been the biggest challenge so far?

Remembering a lot of information.

What support helped you overcome it?

Writing notes and constantly asking questions.

What are your next steps after completing your apprenticeship?

I would love to explore this industry further and gain more knowledge.

Has this apprenticeship helped prepare you for your career? How?

Yes, this apprenticeship has helped me  gain work skills like communication, organisation,  time management and knowledge about childcare giving me the confidence I need to succeed in my career.

What has been the best part of your apprenticeship so far?

Interacting with the children and making activities to support their learning. I have also enjoyed learning more about how to do their routines.
